Halloween is an exciting time for families, but it is also one of the most hazardous holidays for pets. Increased foot traffic, candy exposure, decorations, and loud noises contribute to a spike in veterinary emergencies each year.

🍫 Candy & Sweet Treat Dangers

Chocolate contains substances toxic to dogs and can cause:

  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Tremors or seizures

Xylitol, found in many sugar-free candies and baked goods, is extremely dangerous and can lead to:

  • Sudden drops in blood sugar
  • Liver failure
  • Collapse or death

Always store candy securely and never share treats with pets.

Medical Emergency

Chocolate and xylitol poisoning are life-threatening emergencies. Seek immediate veterinary care if ingestion is suspected.

Even small amounts can be dangerous. Keep all candy out of reach and monitor your pet closely during Halloween.

🎃 Decorations & Household Hazards

Choking & Blockages

Candy wrappers and small decorations can cause choking or intestinal blockages

Fire & Burn Risks

Candles and open flames pose burn and fire risks

Moldy Pumpkins

Moldy pumpkins can cause gastrointestinal upset

👻 Costume Safety

If dressing your pet:

  • Ensure unrestricted movement, vision, and breathing
  • Avoid costumes with small detachable parts
  • Remove costumes if your pet shows signs of stress

Your pet's comfort and safety are more important than a costume. Monitor them closely and remove costumes at the first sign of distress.

🚪 Doorbell Anxiety & Escape Risks

Repeated visitors and noise can cause anxiety or panic.

Confine pets to a quiet, secure room

Use baby gates or closed doors

Ensure collars, tags, and microchips are current

A safe, quiet space away from the front door helps reduce stress and prevents escape attempts.
